Free shopping is the best kind

Thanks to a reader over at Smart Spending's message board, my mom found this great coupon: $15 off a purchase of $15 or more over at JC Penney. Good until 12/24.

I tagged along with mom the first trip and helped her buy some items for the family she and her sister adopted for the holidays. We spent $1.07 after the coupon (because of sales tax).

Mom went back and used the coupon again a couple days later.

I printed out two -- one for me and one for Tim -- and am going to get some new undies as several pairs of mine have been evoking a death rattle. (RIP, undies.... You have served me well.)

So if you usually experience that last-minute "I didn't get enough gifts" panic attack, be sure you have a copy (or two) of this coupon. You can get some items free -- or close to -- assuaging both your guilt and your wallet.

What could be better?

Woman, I love JcP! I got my hootchie boots today! On the back of the JcP reciept from a week ago, it said to do a survey and get 15% off. So the boots were 50% off and then another 15% off on top of that! Woooo Hooooooo!

I tried to use this coupon today and the cashiers told me it was an unauthorized coupon! Waaa! I was so looking forward to getting some stuff for almost free...

Claire,

I'm sorry you had trouble. My mom has used this coupon several times, and my aunt used one too. The registers have some trouble accepting the coupon, in which case the managers have simply said to override it manually.

Maybe the cashiers at your JCP are hard-asses... Even so, next time I would ask to speak to a manager if I were you.

You could also try to use the savings online, though that would increase the price thanks to shipping.

But seriously, folks: This coupon helped me stretch my "giving dollars." Now that the gifts for the family we adopted have been delivered, I'm working on getting mittens and socks for the homeless encampment that's set up its tents in my church's parking lot.
They have these really warm and soft gloves on sale for $5.99, so I can buy three pairs for a few bucks.
For me, losing a glove is an irritation. For someone living in a tent when the temperatures are in the 20s, losing a glove is a misery.
And yeah, JC Penney isn't making much off me right now -- but they're gaining customer loyalty. In the future if I need something I'll check there first. I'll probably start with the clearance racks, you understand, but I will go there.

Update: I contacted JC Penney because I wanted to write about this coupon offer for my Smart Spending blog.
Oops. It turns out it was an illegal reproduction of a one-time-use coupon. Someone took off the codes and posted it online with a Web address similar to JC Penney's.
So that's why it wouldn't work: There were no numbers on the UPC nor was there a confirmation code.
Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.
