I may never buy toilet paper again!

And not in some creepy three-seashells kind of way. Or stealing TP from restaurant bathrooms. I'm talking about Alice.com, where I will now be getting lots of things free!

If you're not familiar with Alice.com, it's a nifty little site. Essentially it's a newer, better drugstore.com. There are all sorts of toiletries and household items to buy.

A helpful checklist when you sign up lets you designate specific items you tend to shop for. Then, you can click on those items -- garbage bags, laundry detergent, etc -- and see the selection available. Or do a search (by item or brand) for the exact thing you want.

One of my favorite features is that you can set up reminders. As you choose items for the "My Products" page, the site asks how frequently you buy them. It will then remind you if you're due to run out soon. This is great for people like me. I constantly run out of garbage bags, hand soap and a few other random things. Then I have to hunt around for whatever deal I can get at that exact moment. The reminder function will probably save me a bundle.

Another nice thing? Automatic coupons. The site keeps track of various manufacturer's coupons and applies them without any work on your part. No fuss, no muss. Great for anyone who hates the hassle of clipping.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, shipping is always free! This has always been a sticking point for me, when it comes to online drugstores. Sure, the prices may be lower, but that doesn't help me if the shipping costs obliterate any savings. Alice.com, though, has no physical location, so there's never any sales tax or shipping costs. The price you see is the price you get.

Okay, all this is great, you're thinking, but how does any of this mean I get free stuff? Well, we're back to one of my favorite themes: Why Swagbucks is awesome!

Swagbucks has $5 Alice.com gift cards for 20 SB. Twenty. If you're even remotely diligent about your searches, you can get that in about 10 days. If you're kind of compulsive, like me, you'll get one in 5-6 days. (And when you sign up, Swagbucks starts you off with 3 SB, just to get you on your way.)

Alice.com has a pretty wide selection. Under my products, I have deodorant, shampoo, razors, garbage bags, storage containers, hair scrunchies, vitamins, sunscreen and cat food -- just to name a small selection. I was psyched to see a couple of Catwalk products that I have been wanting to try out. (I'm a sucker for anything by Tigi!) We've also been discussing the need for a Swiffer around here, and that's in Alice's inventory.

Just think how nice it would be to spend $25 less a month in your drugstore. Whether you want to try out Gladware, stock up on batteries, get some Forever stamps or get some extra contact lens solution, you're set with Alice.com. And isn't it always nice to get a little extra breathing room in your budget?

Use that $25 to snowflake your debt, add a little extra to your savings, or -- heck -- go out to Chili's and get the "2 for $20" deal. Whatever. All I know is, we'll be spending a lot less on toilet paper around here.

Sign up at Swagbucks, and get started on your own free toiletries.

If you got $25 a month for Alice.com, what would you buy? Necessities? Indulgences?

Using a freebie: Get what you need or what you want?

We all love freebies. They make our little frugal hearts beat a little faster. At least, that's the effect they have on me.

But not all free stuff is equal. Most of us would work a lot harder to get a free shirt of our choosing than we would for some random promotional t-shirt. Similarly, sometimes you can choose what it is you get for free. That's when the real quandary can present itself: What's the best use of a freebie?

Here's a good example -- and one that I have yet to decide:

I saw an ad offering first-time customers a free waxing service. At first, I thought it would be a great way to save money. My eyebrows need doing, and this will keep me from spending money on it. Seems perfect, right?

Except that, at a beauty school, that service will only be $8. Don't get me wrong: Saving any money is always great. But I feel like you should make the most of this kind of open-ended freebie. To me, that means a service over $10.

Leg waxing, for example, isn't cheap -- even at beauty schools. Knees-down is $25. And there are always more -- ahem -- private areas of the body that can be depilated. That kind of thing is never cheap, at least by my standards.

By the way, yes, I realize that this is an utterly shallow, immaterial situation. Nevertheless, it highlights the personal finance question of how to make the best use of freebies.

When considering the question, you have one of two options: You can get what you need -- thereby saving money on expenses -- or you can get what you want -- letting you indulge yourself without spending.

The first option is a classic example of saving money. You are lowering your expenses, which frees up money to go against debt or into savings. For example, if I use my rewards points to get a grocery store gift card, I'm lowering the amount I usually spend on food. At the end of the week or month, there will be a small surplus that I can use to better my financial situation.

The second option is frugal, but not in such a straightforward way. It's frugal, because you're going out or getting something without spending money. But that does not mean you're actually saving money. Perhaps I use that grocery gift card to buy an expensive treat for myself. This means I won't have a surplus at the end of the week/month. Still, I haven't exceeded my budget, either.

Or I could skip the grocery store altogether. Instead, I could choose a restaurant or department store gift card. Again, I get something without spending money, but I don't have extra money lying around at the end of the transaction, either.

Even so, getting what you want can be better than what you need. If you live very carefully, avoiding spending on unnecessary things, you can start to feel deprived. This can lead to spending sprees, if you get to a point where you just can't take it anymore. By getting a few indulgences for free, you can feel less deprived and are, therefore, less likely to become the financial equivalent of "stir crazy." Sometimes that saves more money than avoiding a direct expense.

So what should we choose?

For the most part, I use freebies to keep us from feeling deprived. This can be integral when you're married to a spender -- even a reformed one. There are a lot of ways to indulge frugally. Sometimes I mystery shop to allow us a meal out; I save up rewards to allow for nicer holiday gifts; I try to find specials and promotions for the occasional night out at a bar; Coke Rewards means free movie tickets. There are a plethora of ways to work in frugal fun, but the point is that some indulgence here and there can keep you on the straight and narrow the rest of the time. (Or, at least, the majority of the time -- we are human, after all.)

But there are times when you have to bite the bullet and apply freebies to a direct expense. I need some new bras, so I cashed in some rewards to get Macy's gift cards. They will be boring and utilitarian, but they'll also be free. Given our relatively short time frame to make a dent in our debt, it's the best use of that freebie right now.

Similarly, Tim's Body Shop products are so expensive that the rewards program primarily helps us stretch our dollar. The $15- and $25 rewards mean an extra product for free. That can be huge -- especially back in Washington, when Tim was going through a $20 jar of body butter in a week or less.

I suppose this mixed-use of freebies is a viable third option. Many rewards programs offer gift cards with several possible applications. Amazon.com or Wal-Mart cards, for example, can buy gifts, household necessities, groceries or some personal indulgence. And more programs are offering Visa gift cards, which allow for all sorts of purchases -- necessities or luxuries.

No matter what, it's important not to lose sight of a few key facts:

  • A freebie is only free if you avoid spending money. Sound simple? It's not. Getting a free haircut is great -- unless you get talked into a $70 color. A $25 gift card to Nordstrom's means you'll almost certainly walk out poorer. (Unless you stick to one or two makeup items, or find a really fabulous sale on some shoes.)
  • Your priorities aren't necessarily other people's. Maybe you use that Safeway gift card for groceries, but your neighbor might use that same card to get a different gift card. (Love those ubiquitous GC stands in stores these days!) So long as she's not skipping meals for lack of groceries, she is perfectly justified in having different priorities than you.
  • If it's free, you already won. You got something for nothing. C'mon, how great is that?! Pretty great. So try to enjoy your freebie, no matter how you end up applying it. So long as you use it to enjoy life a little more -- decreasing stress by decreasing expenses or getting to indulge yourself without spending a dime -- then you've used it correctly.

When you get to choose, do you use freebies for things you need or for things you want? Why does that work best for you?

And --
far more importantly -- do you have an answer for my waxing conundrum?!

(Okay, you don't actually have to answer that last bit. I just wanted an excuse to use the words "waxing conundrum.")

Is Freecycle getting greedy?

Ever since I heard about Freecycle - lo, those many years ago - I have been a fan. It's just a terrific concept, really. People trying to reduce clutter can offer up their unwanted items to others who need them.

More often than not, I don't need or want whatever is posted. But it's nice to know that there is a place where things I need might come up. Perhaps it's a strange sort of comfort, but it's mine all the same.

That said, before we moved, I had already begun to notice a shift in the tone of emails. People were writing an increasing number of "wanted" posts. For those of you not familiar with Freecycle, that is simply stating that they need/want a particular item. If anyone has such a thing lying around unused, the poster will get a reply.

It just seems wrong. To me, Freecycle is about what you have -- about what you can give -- not about what you want to get. If you want things, you sign up for the updates. Perhaps what you need will be posted. Perhaps not. It's the nature of the site.

So this attitude of the posters strikes me as odd. Would these people dictate a list of needs to a thrift store worker? No, of course not! (At least, I hope not.) Because what you see is what you get. If the thrift store doesn't have it, it's because no one has donated it -- or the ones that were donated were snatched up already. And given that you actually pay the thrift stores money, I really don't understand how that attitude extends to something where people are gifting it to you.

Please don't mistake my distaste for cynicism. If we were talking about kids' clothes or something dire, I would of course support it. But that's not what gets posted. People request random things, few of which ever seem all that necessary. Often, I open these posts, to see why the person felt justified in asking for it. I've yet to see anything like, "Brother in hospital, parents flying down, have no bed for them to sleep on." It's usually just a quick couple sentences about the desired item.

And I should add that I'm not alone in my surprise at people's attitudes. About six months ago, some of the Seattle Freecycle mods wrote a note about the increasing number of "wanted" posts. It reminded people that Freecycle was about giving, not receiving. That did decrease the number, at least for a time. But the frequency was picking up again by the time we were preparing to move.

But if I thought it was bad in Seattle, boy oh boy I was in for a shock. The first week we were here, I signed up for Freecycle. I hoped to find some furnishings for our new place. No such luck, I'm afraid.

Still, getting email updates for Phoenix Freecycle groups has been quite educational. The sheer number of "wanted" posts boggles the mind. There's about one for every two posts actually offering something. Some days, the ratio is a lot worse than that.

These people aren't shy about asking for things, either. One poster wanted furnishings for a new apartment. The post literally just asked for furniture. Nothing specific or humble about it. Another person actually asked for a laptop computer. (!!!!) Based on the wording and writing style, I'm pretty sure it was the same one who then added another post asking for plates, silverware and glasses.

And yes, I know the old adage about a few bad apples. That's what I thought at first, too. But we're in our third week here and the "wanted" posts show no sign of decreasing. These people never explain that there exigent circumstances, or they just moved and have no money til payday to get a bed. They just state their needs and hope.

I guess, technically, there's no law against being brash. To use another cliche, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. But it seems like they're taking a selfless system and tarnishing it with their greedy expectations.

Who are these people? The more cynical part of me says it's the same people who overspent during the boom. They got further and further into debt with their consumerist ways, thinking they deserved to have nice things and a big house; now, in the economic contraction, they think they've found a whole new way to fulfill their sense of entitlement -- all while staying in budget. Sort of like breaking the spirit of the law in order to follow the letter of it.

But perhaps I'm wrong. Maybe those people are finally learning their lessons and it's some other group entirely. Perhaps it's random people from various walks of life, all burned out by the recession and the constant self-denial.

In the end, though, it doesn't really matter who it is, does it? Whoever they are, why they are doing it... The fact is that it's happening. And there aren't many ways to get around it. Sure, the mods can banish them. But they can get another screen name and come back. There are enough free email accounts out there to tide someone over until the next millenium.

Nope, this greed is probably here to stay. I only hope it won't pollute the whole system. There's been enough of that in this country already.

Are you a member of Freecycle? Have you noticed any change in posts? Do you think it's okay to request things in these sorts of forums?

How to know you've gone over to "The Frugal Side"

Sam's Club offers business members early hours -- including some coffee and some snacks. (Mom got a membership back when freelance writers still qualified. I'm her secondary on the account.)

Walking in to get some milk, I noticed they had still-green bananas instead of the usual donut holes. Wouldn't be good for another day or two. But on the way out, I grabbed one.

Walking out, I prided myself on grabbing a banana. Sure, it wouldn't be ready to eat today, but it was free food. Then, a sudden realization hit me: I could have had two bananas. I didn't ask Tim to grab one. I started mentally kicking myself.

About five seconds into a "Dumb, dumb, dumb!" rant in my head, I realized that I was castigating myself over something that sells for about 99 cents per pound.

That was when I realized: I am definitely losing my perspective... And yet, I was still irritated at the missed chance.

Very worrying.

Worse is that I would see the banana while walking into the kitchen to get some water or whatever. And I would think, "Oooo! Free banana!"

Yep. That's right. I'm excited to eat a banana.

I think the important part is just acceptance of this facet of my personality. And to stay away from monkeys.

What was your moment of realization? What is your favorite thing you've gotten for free?
